The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Recite in the name of your Lord Who created, 1 He created man from a clot. 2 Recite: And thy Lord is the Most Generous, 3 He Who taught (the use of) the pen,- 4 He taught the human being what he did not know. 5 Nay, surely man transgresses; 6 for he believes himself to be self-sufficient. 7 Verily unto thy Lord is the return. 8 What do you think? Have you seen he who forbids 9 a servant [of God] from praying? 10 Bethinkest thou, if he is himself guided, 11 Or enjoins Righteousness? 12 Seest thou if he denies (Truth) and turns away? 13 Does he not know that God observes all things? 14 Nay, but if he cease not We will seize him by the forelock - 15 A lying, sinful forelock! 16 So, let him call upon his way! 17 We shall call on the guards of Hell. 18 Nay, pay thou no heed to him, but prostrate thyself [before God] and draw close [unto Him]! ۩ 19

Reading the Quran translated into English, or any other language, is more like reading books of interpretation than reading literal translations.

How does the memorization exercise algorithm work? At the lowest level 0, all words are visible. While the highest level 9 hides all words. What about at mid-level, like 3, for example? You might think that the algorithm hides precisely 3 out of every nine words. Not quite! At level 3, each word has a 3 out of 9 chance to hide, and 6 out of 9 to be visible. In other words, it is possible, but highly unlikely, for all words at level 3 to be hidden, or, that all of them to be visible! Also, at mid-levels, and in proportion to the difficulty level, hideouts can be partially incomplete or transparent so that words may be partially visible underneath.
