AND WHEN the messengers [of God] came to the house of Lot, 61 he said to them: 'I do not know you' 62 They said: Nay, but we bring thee that concerning which they keep disputing, 63 We bring you the truth, and indeed we are truthful. 64 Depart with your family in a part of the night and walk behind them and let none of you turn round. Go to a place where you are commanded' 65 And We revealed to him this decree, that the roots of these shall be cut off in the morning. 66 In the meantime the people of the city came to Lot rejoicing. 67 He said, 'These are my guests; put me not to shame, 68 And fear Allah, and humiliate me not. 69 They replied, "Did we not forbid you to bring anyone to your house?" 70 [Lot] said: "[Take instead] these daughters of mine, if you must do [whatever you intend to do]!" 71 Verily by your life they were utterly confused in their (lustful) drunkenness. 72 But the (mighty) Blast overtook them before morning, 73 And We turned (the cities) upside down, and rained down on them brimstones hard as baked clay. 74 There are great Signs in this for those endowed with intelligence. 75 And verily they are on a pathway lasting. 76 Verily, herein lies a message indeed for all who believe [in God]. 77 And the dwellers of the thicket also were most surely unjust. 78 and so We inflicted Our retribution on them. And behold, both these [sinful communities] lived by a highway, [to this day] plain to see 79
