The Thamud accused the messengers of lies. 141 When their brother Saleh said to them: "Will you not take heed?" 142 Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger for you, 143 So fear God and follow me. 144 For this I ask of you no wage; my wage falls only upon the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Do you think you will be left secure here 146 "In gardens and water springs?" 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill. 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 Do not obey the orders of the transgressors 151 Who work corruption in the land and rectify not. 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. For her is a [time of] drink, and for you is a [time of] drink, [each] on a known day. 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 They slew the she-camel, but later became regretful 157 The punishment therefore seized them; indeed in this is a sign; and most of them were not believers. 158 And verily thy Lord! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
