The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 Their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 144 I do not ask for any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will you be left secure in what is here; 146 amidst [these] gardens and springs 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 Will you still hew your dwellings in the mountains? 149 So fear Allah, and obey me. 150 and pay no heed to the counsel of those who are given to excesses 151 Who work corruption in the land and rectify not. 152 They said, “You are under a magic spell.” 153 Thou art but a mortal like us. So bring some token if thou art of the truthful. 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. For her is a [time of] drink, and for you is a [time of] drink, [each] on a known day. 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 But they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 Your Lord, He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
