The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you who covers himself [with a garment], 1 Rise up and warn! 2 Thy Lord magnify 3 thy robes purify 4 and defilement flee! 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 and persevere for your Lord's sake. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 9 For the unbelievers, anything but easy. 10 Leave to Me the one, whom I have created all by Myself, 11 To whom I granted resources in abundance, 12 And sons to be by his side!- 13 And for whom I smoothed everything. 14 And who yet coveteth that shall increase. 15 Never will he receive more. He has been hostile to Our revelations. 16 I will make a distressing punishment overtake him. 17 He planned and plotted. 18 May he be accursed, how he planned! 19 Again, death seized him, how was his determining! 20 Then he looked around, 21 Then he frowned and scowled, 22 then he retreated and waxed proud, 23 and said, "This is nothing but sorcery from the ancients. 24 Naught is this but the word of Man. 25 Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire! 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It does not allow to live, and neither leaves [to die,] 28 scorching the flesh; 29 Over it are nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
