The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me: 144 And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in what is here; 146 "Gardens and Springs, 147 And green crops (fields etc.) and date-palms with soft spadix. 148 You hew dwellings in mountains and exult in that. 149 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 150 And do not obey the bidding of the extravagant, 151 who corrupt in the earth, and do not reform' 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful." 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed. 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 But they hamstrung her and then regretted it. 157 So the torment took hold of them: verily herein is a sign, but most of them are not believers. 158 And indeed your Lord – only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
