Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 By the Clear Book. 2 that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. 3 therein every wise bidding 4 an order from Us. We are ever sending. 5 in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. 8 Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. 11 Lord, remove this torment from us for we are believers". 12 How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), 13 then they turned away from him and said, 'A man tutored, possessed!' 14 Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). 15 On the Day whereon We assault them with the greatest assault, verily We shall take vengeance. 16 ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] 17 (and said): “Deliver to me Allah's servants. I am a trustworthy Messenger to you, 18 And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. 19 I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. 20 And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. 21 And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. 22 And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; 23 And leave the sea intervening; surely they are a host that shall be drowned. 24 How many were the gardens, springs, 25 And fields and grand palaces! 26 and good things in which they took delight. 27 Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). 28 And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
