A crowd of earlier generations 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 They had been affluent before, 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 (We) and our fore-fathers of yore?” 48 Proclaim, “Without doubt all – the former and the latter.” 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 "Then moreover, verily, you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)! 51 you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit, 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 drink it as the most insatiably thirsty camels drink!" 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 We created you, then why do you believe not? 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Is it you who cause them to grow or do We? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 “We have been penalised; 66 Nay, but we are deprived! 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Do you send it down from the clouds, or We send it down? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
