a large group of the earlier people 39 and a good many of later times. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 They will be in the midst of scorching wind and boiling water, 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 Which is neither cool nor is for respect. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life? 47 and perhaps, too, our forebears of old?" 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 "Then moreover, verily, you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)! 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 filling your bellies, with it 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 "Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!" 55 That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense! 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises? 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 Is it you who cause it to grow - or are We the cause of its growth? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out; 71 Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
