The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. 1 The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,- 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 they see it as being far off; 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, 8 And the hills will be light as wool. 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 His wife and his brother, 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. 14 By no means! For the raging flames of the fire 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose. 18 ۞ Surely man was created fretful, 19 Very nervous when touched by misfortune. 20 And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. 21 But not so the worshippers 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 those in whose wealth is a right known 24 For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened); 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord 27 surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from 28 And those who guard their sex except from their wives and women slaves of old 29 Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - 31 and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, 32 And those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
