The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 Rise up and warn! 2 And proclaim the Purity of your Lord. 3 And thine raiment purify. 4 shun uncleanness; 5 Do not bestow favours in expectation of return, 6 and for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 That shall be - that Day - a day hard. 9 and it will not be easy for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, 11 And for whom I appointed wealth extended. 12 And children to be by his side! 13 whose life I have made run smoothly 14 and who still desires more. 15 Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations. 16 I will cover him with arduous torment. 17 Behold, [when Our messages are conveyed to one who is bent on denying the truth,] he reflects and meditates [as to how to disprove them] 18 Perish he! How maliciously he devised! 19 Again, may he be cursed how he plotted; 20 He then dared to lift his gaze. 21 frowned and scowled, 22 Then he turned back and was arrogant 23 Then he said: naught is this but magic from of old; 24 “This is nothing but the speech of a man.” 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 What will let you know what the Scorching is like! 27 It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned], 28 and it burns the flesh. 29 Over it are nineteen (guards). 30 We have appointed none but angels as the keepers of the Fire, and We have not made their number but as a trial for the unbelievers so that those who have been endowed with the Book will be convinced and the believers' faith will increase, and neither those who have been endowed with the Book nor the believers will fall into any doubt. As for those in whose hearts there is a sickness as well as the unbelievers, they will say: “What did Allah aim at by this strange parable?” Thus does Allah let whomsoever He pleases to go astray, and directs whomsoever He pleases to the Right Way. And none knows the hosts of your Lord but He. (And Hell has only been mentioned here) that people may take heed. 31
