The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 arise, and warn! 2 Glorify your Lord, 3 thy robes purify 4 And all defilement shun! 5 Do not give, thinking to gain greater 6 And for the sake of your Lord, patiently endure. 7 For when the trumpet shall sound, 8 So that is a tough day. 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 LEAVE Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, 11 And gave him abundant wealth 12 and children living in his presence, 13 And made several preparations for him. 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give yet more! 15 Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; 16 [and so] I shall constrain him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 For he thought and he plotted -- 18 (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! 19 Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! - 20 Then he thought; 21 Then he frowned and scowled, 22 Then he turned away, and was haughty. 23 He said, 'This is naught but a trumped-up sorcery; 24 It is nothing but the word of a mortal' 25 I will cast him into the fire of Hell. 26 And what have you understood, what hell is! 27 It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned], 28 Burning the skins! 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
