Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the dawn, 1 By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah). 2 The multiple and the one, 3 And by the Night when it passeth away;- 4 Is there in that an oath for the mindful? 5 Did you not see how did your Lord deal with (the tribe of) Aad? 6 of the columned (city) of Iram, 7 the like of whom no nation was ever created in the lands of the world? 8 and Thamood, who hollowed the rocks in the valley, 9 And with Pharaoh, lord of stakes? 10 All of them committed excesses in their lands, 11 So they made great mischief therein? 12 Then their Lord unloosed upon them the lash of chastisement. 13 For thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower. 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him by exalting him and bestowing His bounties upon him, he says: “My Lord has exalted me.” 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the needy. 18 Why do you take away the inheritance of others indiscriminately 19 and you have a love of wealth which can never be satisfied. 20 Nay! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 And thy Lord cometh, and His angels, rank upon rank, 22 And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)? 23 He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life! 24 On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled. 25 And no one shall bind with (anything like) His binding. 26 (To the righteous soul will be said:) "O (thou) soul, in (complete) rest and satisfaction! 27 Return towards your Lord – you being pleased with Him, and He pleased with you! 28 So enter among My servants, 29 yea, enter thou My paradise!" 30
