Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 And ten nights, 2 by the even, and the odd, 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 Have you not heard how your Lord dealt with Aad? 6 [the people of] Iram the many-pillared, 7 the like of which was never created in the land, 8 And Thamood, who hewed out the rocks of the valley? 9 And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? - 10 who all were insolent in the land 11 And made therein much mischief. 12 Thy Lord unloosed on them a scourge of chastisement; 13 for, indeed, your Sustainer is ever on the watch! 14 So man, whenever his Lord tests him by giving him honour and favours – thereupon he says, “My Lord has honoured me.” 15 And when He proveth him, and so stinteth unto him his provision, he saith: 'my Lord hath despised me. 16 No! But you do not honor the orphan 17 and you do not urge one another to feed the needy, 18 And you eat away the heritage, devouring (everything) indiscriminately, 19 And love wealth with abounding love. 20 No indeed! When the earth is crushed and ground to dust, 21 And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And on that Day hell will be brought [within sight]; on that Day man will remember [all that he did and failed to do]: but what will that remembrance avail him? 23 He will say: "Alas! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my life!" 24 Then on that Day Allah will chastise as none other can chastise; 25 And His bonds will be such as none other can bind. 26 O satisfied soul, 27 return to your Lord wellpleased, wellpleasing. 28 Join My worshipers and 29 yea, enter thou My paradise!" 30
