The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
I CALL TO witness the sun and his early morning splendour, 1 And the moon as she follows in his wake, 2 And the day when it revealeth him, 3 and by the night when it draws a veil over it, 4 by the sky and how He built it 5 By the earth and Him Who spread it forth, 6 By the Soul, and the proportion and order given to it; 7 and inspired it with knowledge of evil and piety, 8 Indeed he succeeds who purifies his ownself (i.e. obeys and performs all that Allah ordered, by following the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism and by doing righteous good deeds). 9 and he who suppresses it will be ruined. 10 The Thamud denied (the truth) in their perverseness 11 when the most wretched of them uprose, 12 And the messenger of Allah said: It is the she-camel of Allah, so let her drink! 13 But they called him a liar and hamstrung her. So God obliterated them for their crime, and (destroyed) all of them alike. 14 And He feared not the consequence thereof 15
