Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 by the Ten (secret) Nights, 2 And the even and the odd, 3 The night as it advances, 4 Is there (not) in these an adjuration (or evidence) for those who understand? 5 (Muhammad), consider how your Lord dealt with the tribe of Ad, 6 of the columned (city) of Iram, 7 The like of which was not built in the cities, 8 And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley; 9 and with Pharaoh of the [many] tent-poles? 10 (All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands, 11 And multiplied therein corruption. 12 Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements: 13 For thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower. 14 As for man, when his Lord tries him by giving him honour and gifts, then he says (puffed up): "My Lord has honoured me." 15 But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!" 16 Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan 17 And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor. 18 and you devour the inheritance with greed, 19 And you love wealth with immense love. 20 Most certainly – when the earth is smashed and blown to bits. 21 and your Lord comes with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 and Gehenna (Hell) is brought near on that Day the human will remember, and how shall the Reminder be for him? 23 He shall say, 'O would that I had forwarded for my life!' 24 None can punish as He will punish on that day, 25 and Allah will bind as none other can bind. 26 'O soul at peace, 27 return to your Lord well pleased with him and He will be pleased with you. 28 So enter among My (righteous) servants 29 Enter then My garden." 30
