He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ He frowned and turned away. 1 Because there came to him the blind man. 2 for how can you know that he might seek to purify himself, 3 or receive some (Quranic) advice which would benefit him. 4 Now as for him who believes himself to be self-sufficient 5 You pay full attention, 6 Though it is no blame to thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding). 7 And to him who came to you eagerly 8 And he feareth 9 So you leave him, and are engrossed elsewhere! 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 so let those who want to follow its guidance do so. 12 [It is recorded] in honored sheets, 13 Exalted (in dignity), purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Noble and dutiful. 16 Cursed be man! how ungrateful is he! 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 From a sperm-drop: He hath created him, and then mouldeth him in due proportions; 19 Then He makes the Path easy for him; 20 Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; 21 Then, when it is His Will, He will raise him up (again). 22 But no. He has not fulfilled what was enjoined on him. 23 Let man, then, consider [the sources of] his food: 24 We poured water, pouring it in great abundance, 25 And We split the earth in fragments, 26 and therein made the grains to grow 27 and grape vines and vegetables, 28 And olives and date palms, 29 and burgeoning enclosed gardens 30 And fruits and fodder,- 31 A provision for you and for your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry shall be sounded 33 On that day man will run away from his brother. 34 his mother, his father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others). 37 Some faces on that day will be radiant, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news. 39 And many will be dust-begrimed, 40 enveloped by darkness. 41 those -- they are the unbelievers, the libertines. 42
