The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 arise, and warn! 2 Thy Lord magnify 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 And stay away from idols. 5 And do not confer favor to acquire more 6 And for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded, 8 that day will be a harsh day, 9 For the disbelievers - not easy. 10 Leave Me with him whom I alone have created, 11 And then bestowed upon him ample means, 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 And made several preparations for him. 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 I shall oblige him to (climb a slippery mountain in the Hell-fire called As-Sa'ud, or to) face a severe torment! 17 For he thought and he plotted -- 18 death seize him, how he determined! 19 Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 frowned and scowled, 22 then turned back, and swelling-up with pride, 23 Then he said: "This is nothing but magic from that of old; 24 "This is nothing but the word of a human being!" 25 Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire! 26 And what do you know what Hell is? 27 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; 28 making [all truth] visible to mortal man. 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
