The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou shrouded in thy mantle, 1 Rise up and warn! 2 And thy Lord do thou magnify! 3 Purify your inner self, 4 and defilement flee! 5 And do not through giving seek thyself to gain, 6 And persevere in the way of your Lord. 7 When the Trumpet shall be sounded, 8 that day will be a harsh day, 9 It will not be easy for those who deny the truth. 10 Leave Me and him whom I created alone, 11 To whom I granted resources in abundance, 12 and children living in his presence, 13 And made life smooth and comfortable for him! 14 And yet he desires that I should add more! 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 I will make a distressing punishment overtake him. 17 Surely he reflected and guessed, 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 May be then be accursed, how he plotted! 20 Then he considered [again]; 21 then frowned and scowled; 22 Then he turned back and was proud; 23 and said, "This is nothing but sorcery from the ancients. 24 Naught is this but the word of Man. 25 Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire! 26 And what will make you know exactly what Hell-fire is? 27 It leaves nothing, nor does it spare; 28 and it burns the flesh. 29 Over it are appointed nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
