Said the Council of the people of Pharaoh, 'Surely this man is a cunning sorcerer 109 who wants to drive you out of your land! " [Said Pharaoh:] "What, then, do you advise?" 110 They answered: "Let him and his brother wait awhile, and send unto all cities heralds 111 Who will bring you every learned magician." 112 And the sorcerers came to Pharaoh, saying, 'We shall surely have a wage, if we should be the victors?' 113 He answered: Yes, and surely ye shall be of those brought near (to me). 114 They said: O Moses! Either throw (first) or let us be the first throwers? 115 Said Moses: "Throw ye (first)." So when they threw, they bewitched the eyes of the people, and struck terror into them: for they showed a great (feat of) magic. 116 And we revealed unto Musa: cast down thy rod. And lo! it was swallowing up that which they had feigned. 117 ۞ So the truth was proved and their works were disproved. 118 They were therefore defeated here and they turned back humiliated. 119 And the sorcerers were cast down, bowing themselves. 120 They said: we believe in the Lord of the worlds. 121 the Lord of Moses and Aaron." 122 Pharaoh said, "You dare believe in Him before I have given you permission? Behold, this is indeed a plot which you have devised in this city in order to drive its people out. But you shall soon know the consequences, 123 I shall cut off your hands and feet on the opposite sides, and then crucify you all.' 124 They said, "Indeed, to our Lord we will return. 125 "The only reason you have to hate us is that we believed in the signs of our Lord as they came to us. O our Lord, give us sufficient endurance that we may die submitting (to You)." 126
