a large group of the earlier people 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 BUT AS FOR those who have persevered in evil - what of those who have persevered in evil? 41 [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 and had persisted in the Great Sin. 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 you shall eat (the fruit) of the Tree of Zakkum. 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense! 56 We! it is We Who created you: wherefore confess ye not? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower? 64 Did We will, We would make it broken orts, and you would remain bitterly jesting -- 65 “We have been penalised; 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 Have you considered the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
