Aaron had already told them, "O my people! You are only being tested by this. Your Lord is the All Merciful, so follow me and obey my command." 90 They had said: "We will not abandon this cult, but we will devote ourselves to it until Moses returns to us." 91 [Moses] said, "O Aaron, what prevented you, when you saw them going astray, 92 “That you did not come after me? So did you disobey my order?” 93 He said: O son of my mother! seize me not by my beard nor by my head; surely I was afraid lest you should say: You have caused a division among the children of Israel and not waited for my word. 94 (Moses) said: "What then is thy case, O Samiri?" 95 (Samiri) said: "I saw what they saw not, so I took a handful (of dust) from the hoof print of the messenger [Jibrael's (Gabriel) horse] and threw it [into the fire in which were put the ornaments of the Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, or into the calf]. Thus my inner-self suggested to me." 96 'Begone! Your lot in this life is to cry: "untouchable!' said he (Moses). 'An appointment awaits you that you cannot fail to keep. Look at your god which you clung to indeed we will burn it and scatter its ashes upon the sea' 97 Your god is only Allah, except for whom there is no deity. He has encompassed all things in knowledge." 98 Thus We tell you, (Muhammad), the stories of the past and We have given you the Quran. 99 Whoever turns away from it (this Quran i.e. does not believe in it, nor acts on its orders), verily, they will bear a heavy burden (of sins) on the Day of Resurrection, 100 therein abiding forever; how evil upon the Day of Resurrection that burden for them! 101 on the Day when the trumpet is blown: for on that Day We will assemble all such as had been lost in sin, their eyes dimmed [by terror,] 102 They shall consult together secretly: You did tarry but ten (centuries). 103 We know well what they will utter, whereas the wisest among them will say, “You have stayed just for a day.” 104
