A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 which will neither be cool nor soothing. 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin (of disbelief). 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day. 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers – 51 you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit, 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you thought about what (sperm) you ejaculate? 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 from changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 Verily we are undone. 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 If We will, We would make it bitter, why then do you not give thanks? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
