Thamood, belied their Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih (Saleh) said to them: "Will you not fear Allah and obey Him? 142 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 And I ask of you no hire therefor; MY hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 in the midst of gardens and fountains, 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 "And you carve houses out of mountains with great skill. 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 And obey not the command of the prodigal, 151 those who spread corruption on earth instead of setting things to rights!" 152 They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 He said, 'This is a she-camel; to her a draught and to you a draught, on a day appointed, 155 And do not touch her with evil, lest the punishment of a grievous day should overtake you. 156 But they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
