We did send Moses aforetime, with Our Signs, to Pharaoh and his Chiefs: He said, "I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds." 46 but when he came to them with Our signs, they ridiculed them, 47 And We did not show them a sign but it was greater than its like, and We overtook them with chastisement that they may turn. 48 And they said: magician! supplicate thy Lord for us for that which He hath covenanted with thee; verily we shall let ourselves be guided. 49 So when We averted the calamity from them, they immediately broke the promise! 50 And Pharaoh proclaimed among his people: 'O my people, do I not possess the kingdom of Egypt, and these rivers flowing beneath me? What, do you not see? 51 “Or that I am better than him, for he is lowly – and he does not seem to talk plainly.” 52 “So why was he not bestowed with armlets of gold? Or angels should have come with him staying at his side!” 53 Thus he made light (of the matter) to his people, and they obeyed him. They were certainly wicked. 54 Then when they displeased Us, We inflicted a retribution on them, so We drowned them all together, 55 And We made them a precedent and an example for the later peoples. 56
