The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer. 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: 4 So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. 5 Indeed, they see it [as] distant, 6 And We behold it nigh. 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 and the mountains shall be as plucked wool-tufts, 9 And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. 14 By no means! It will be the fierce flame 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 and amassed wealth and covetously hoarded it. 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 And when good touches him, withholding [of it], 21 Except those who pray, 22 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 23 And those within whose wealth is a known right 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 who confirm the Day of Doom 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure, 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers. 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 and those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who are attentive at their worship. 34 Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured. 35
