He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ The Prophet frowned and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting]. 2 And what do you know, he may be of the pure! 3 Or be admonished, so that the admonition might have profited him? 4 As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient, 5 to him didst thou give thy whole attention, 6 Though it is no blame to thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding). 7 but as for one who comes to you, eagerly 8 and in awe of God 9 to him thou payest no heed. 10 Indeed, this [Quran] is an admonition. 11 So whoever wishes may remember it. 12 (It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour, 13 Exalted, Purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 noble and purified. 16 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! 17 Out of what did Allah create him? 18 Out of a sperm-drop did He create him and then determined a measure for him, 19 He makes his path easy for him. 20 He will then send him to death and have him laid in the grave. 21 Then, when it is His Will, He will raise him up (again). 22 Nay, but (man) hath not done what He commanded him. 23 Let man look at his food: 24 It is We Who pour forth water, pouring, 25 And We split the earth in clefts, 26 Thereby produced grain in it. 27 and vines and edible plants, 28 and olive trees and date palms 29 the densely tree'd gardens, 30 And fruits and herbage: 31 A provision for you and your cattle. 32 But, when the Blast comes, 33 On that day man will run away from his brother. 34 and from his mother and father, 35 And his spouse and his son-- 36 Each man will have enough cares that day. 37 Some faces will shine, 38 laughing, rejoicing at glad tidings. 39 And (many) faces on that day, on them shall be dust, 40 Blackness overcoming them. 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones. 42
