The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
I swear by the sun and its brilliance, 1 and the moon as it reflects the sun! 2 And [by] the day when it displays it 3 and by the night as it envelopes the sun; 4 By the heaven and Who built it, 5 and the earth and all its expanse! 6 By the soul, and That which shaped it 7 And inspired in it the knowledge of its sins and its piety. 8 Indeed he succeeds who purifies his ownself (i.e. obeys and performs all that Allah ordered, by following the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism and by doing righteous good deeds). 9 And he who confines it will surely come to grief. 10 Samood gave the lie (to the truth) in their inordinacy, 11 Behold, the most wicked man among them was deputed (for impiety). 12 And the apostle of God had to tell them: "This is God's she-camel, let her drink." 13 In response they belied him, and hamstrung the she camel – so Allah put ruin over them because of their sins and flattened their dwellings. 14 for none [of them] had any fear of what might befall them. 15
