Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 by the Ten (secret) Nights, 2 by the even, and the odd, 3 And by the night when it departs. 4 There surely is an oath for thinking man. 5 Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with 'Aad - 6 of Iram, known for their lofty columns, 7 Like whom no one else was born in the cities. 8 And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, 9 And with Fir'awn, owner of the stakes 10 Those who rebelled in the cities, 11 So they made great mischief therein? 12 Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements: 13 indeed, your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him by exalting him and bestowing His bounties upon him, he says: “My Lord has exalted me.” 15 But when He tries him (differently), then straitens to him his means of subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me. 16 No! But you show no good to the orphan, 17 And urge not on the feeding of the poor. 18 And devour the inheritance devouring greedily, 19 and you love wealth with boundless love! 20 Nay! When the earth is pounded to powder, 21 And your Lord comes with the angels in rows, 22 On that day, hell will be brought closer and the human being will come to his senses, but this will be of no avail to him. 23 He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life! 24 Upon that day none shall chastise as He chastises, 25 And His bonds will be such as none (other) can bind. 26 [But unto the righteous God will say,] "O thou human being that hast attained to inner peace! 27 "Come back to your Lord, Well-pleased (yourself) and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 Enter among My servants 29 "And enter you My Paradise!" 30
