The Town (Al-Balad)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ No, I swear by this country (Mecca), 1 And thou art a freeman of this City;- 2 And by the begetter (i.e. Adam) and that which he begot (i.e. his progeny); 3 We have indeed created man surrounded by hardships. 4 Does he, then, think that no one has power over him? 5 He shall say: I have wasted much wealth. 6 Does he, then, think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 a tongue, and two lips? 9 and shown him the two paths? 10 Yet, he has not entered into Aqaba 11 And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?- 12 (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.) 13 the giving of food upon the day of hunger 14 of an orphan near of kin, 15 or a needy man in misery; 16 And moreover to be of those who accepted faith, and who urged patience to one another and who urged graciousness to one another. 17 Such are they that have attained to righteousness; 18 And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. 19 Upon them is a fire, in which they are imprisoned, closed and shut above them. 20
