The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ No! I swear by this land, 1 And thou art an indweller of this city - 2 by the begetter, and that he begot, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and struggle. 4 Thinketh he that none hath power over him? 5 He will say: 'I have destroyed a vast wealth' 6 Does man think that no one saw him? 7 Did We not give him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 and guided him on the two paths (of good and evil)? 10 But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep. 11 And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? 12 (It is) the setting free of a slave, 13 Or feeding on a day of severe hunger 14 of an orphan near of kin, 15 or a needy man in misery; 16 Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 But those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand. 19 The Fire will vault them over. 20
