And indeed, even before [the return of Moses] had Aaron said unto them: "O my people! You are but being tempted to evil by this [idol] - for, behold, your [only] Sustainer is the Most Gracious! Follow me, then, and obey my bidding!" 90 They said, "We will never cease being devoted to the calf until Moses returns to us." 91 He (Moses) said: O Aaron! What held thee back when thou didst see them gone astray, 92 "That you followed me not (according to my advice to you)? Have you then disobeyed my order?" 93 He said: O son of my mother! Clutch not my beard nor my head! I feared lest thou shouldst say: Thou hast caused division among the Children of Israel, and hast not waited for my word. 94 (Moses) said: And what hast thou to say, O Samiri? 95 (Samiri) said: "I saw what they saw not, so I took a handful (of dust) from the hoof print of the messenger [Jibrael's (Gabriel) horse] and threw it [into the fire in which were put the ornaments of the Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, or into the calf]. Thus my inner-self suggested to me." 96 (Moses) said: "Get thee gone! but thy (punishment) in this life will be that thou wilt say, 'touch me not'; and moreover (for a future penalty) thou hast a promise that will not fail: Now look at thy god, of whom thou hast become a devoted worshipper: We will certainly (melt) it in a blazing fire and scatter it broadcast in the sea!" 97 Your only deity is God, there is no deity but Him. His knowledge encompasses all things." 98 Thus We relate to you the history of past events, and We have given you a reminder [the Quran] from Us. 99 Whoever turns away from it will surely carry a burden on the Day of Judgement, 100 And will live for ever under it. How evil the burden they will carry on the Day of Doom! 101 On the day when the Trumpet is blown and We shall assemble the guilty on that day, blue -eyed. 102 They shall consult together secretly: You did tarry but ten (centuries). 103 We are most knowing of what they say when the best of them in manner will say, "You remained not but one day." 104
