Call to mind when Abraham said to his father and his people, "I disown utterly that which you worship. 26 except for the One who has created me and will guide me". 27 And he made it a word enduring among his posterity; haply so they would return. 28 In fact, I allowed them and their fathers to enjoy this life till the truth, and the apostle preaching it lucidly, came to them. 29 but when the truth came to them, they said, "This is sorcery, and we reject it." 30 They say: “Why was this Qur'an not sent down upon some great man from the two (main) cities?” 31 Are they the distributors of your Lord’s mercy? We have distributed among them their comforts in the life of this world, and gave high status to some over others so that they mock at each other; and the mercy of your Lord is better than all what they hoard. 32 And were it not that all people had been a single nation, We would certainly have assigned to those who disbelieve in the Beneficent Allah (to make) of silver the roofs of their houses and the stairs by which they ascend. 33 And for their houses - doors and couches [of silver] upon which to recline 34 and gold [beyond count]. Yet all this would have been nothing but a [brief] enjoyment of life in this world - whereas [happiness in] the life to come awaits the God-conscious with thy Sustainer. 35
