A company of the former peoples 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 The Companions of the Left. O Companions of the Left! 41 (they shall live) amid burning winds and boiling water, 42 and the shadow of a smoking blaze 43 Neither cool nor agreeable. 44 They were endowed with good things 45 But persisted in that greater sin, 46 ever saying, 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 (Muhammad), say, "All the ancient and later generations 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day! 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have [indeed] decreed that death shall be [ever-present] among you: but there is nothing to prevent Us 60 from changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 Surely, we have been deprived (of the benefits)". 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Is it you who sent it down from the clouds or is it We who have sent it down? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
