A multitude of those of old 39 and a good many of later times. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 mid burning winds and boiling waters 42 and the shadows of black smoke 43 neither cool nor good. 44 They had been affluent before, 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time 49 will indeed be gathered together at an appointed time on a Day known [only to God]: 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 Lapping it up like female camels raging of thirst with disease." 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 We have created you, so why do you not believe? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Have you seen what you sow? 63 Do you give it its increase, or are We the giver? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 nay, we have been robbed!' 67 Have you seen the water which you drink? 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire you kindle? 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
