The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit (Gabriel) ascend in a day, the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So be thou patient with a sweet patience; 5 behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away 6 but We see it near at hand. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, 9 even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, 10 as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 His kindred who sheltered him, 13 and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself. 14 By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire 15 A fire that melts the hide. 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 and amassed (riches) and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 when good visits him, grudging, 21 except those that pray 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 and who accept as true the [coming of the] Day of Judgment; 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; 31 And those who fulfil their trusts and covenants, 32 and perform their witnessings, 33 And those who keep a guard on their prayer, 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
