The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Arise and warn! 2 And proclaim the Purity of your Lord. 3 And thine raiment purify. 4 And pollution shun. 5 Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)! 6 And for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 When the Trumpet shall be sounded, 8 it will be a hard day 9 for the unbelievers not easy. 10 LEAVE Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, 11 And gave him abundant wealth 12 and children living in his presence, 13 And made life smooth and comfortable for him! 14 and who still desires more. 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 I will cover him with arduous torment. 17 For he had thought and calculated. 18 May he be accursed, how he planned! 19 Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 20 Then he beheld, 21 Then he frowned and he scowled; 22 Then he turned back and was big with pride, 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 “This is nothing but the speech of a man.” 25 Soon I will cast him into hell. 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It does not allow to live, and neither leaves [to die,] 28 making [all truth] visible to mortal man. 29 Over it are Nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
