Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 By the Scripture that maketh plain 2 We have sent it down in a blessed night (We are ever warning) 3 On which all affairs are sorted out and decided 4 A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), 5 As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). 7 There is no god other than He, who gives you life and death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old. 8 Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. 9 WAIT, THEN, for the Day when the skies shall bring forth a pall of smoke which will make obvious [the approach of the Last Hour,] 10 Covering the people, this is a painful torment. 11 (They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" 12 [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, 13 Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. 14 If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). 15 On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. 16 ۞ And verily We tried before them Pharaoh's folk, when there came unto them a noble messenger, 17 [Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allah. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger," 18 And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” 19 and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. 20 And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. 21 And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. 22 God said, "Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued. 23 (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," 24 How many gardens did they leave behind, and how many fountains 25 And cornfields and noble places! 26 and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! 27 Thus. And We caused to inherit it another people. 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. 29
