The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O you (Prophet Muhamad), the cloaked, 1 arise and warn, 2 Proclaim the glory of your Lord; 3 and purify your clothing, 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 Give not, thinking to gain greater 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 Then, when the Trumpet is sounded (i.e. its second blowing); 8 That, at that time, shall be a difficult day, 9 For the unbelievers, anything but easy. 10 Leave to Me the one, whom I have created all by Myself, 11 And for whom I appointed wealth extended. 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 whose life I have made run smoothly 14 Yet he wants that I should give him more. 15 Nay, verily, it is against Our messages that he knowingly, stubbornly sets himself 16 Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities! 17 Surely he reflected and guessed, 18 and woe to him; how he plotted! 19 Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!- 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 and then he frowns and glares, 22 Then he turned back and was haughty; 23 And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; 24 Naught is this but the word of Man. 25 I shall make him suffer the torment of hell. 26 What do you think Hell-fire is? 27 It leaves nothing, nor does it spare; 28 making [all truth] visible to mortal man. 29 Over it are Nineteen. 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
