He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 But what could tell you that per chance he might become pure (from sins)? 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and that the admonition might profit him? 4 As for him who is not in want of any thing, 5 to him didst thou give thy whole attention, 6 though you will not be questioned even if he never purifies himself. 7 But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge] 8 and fearfully, 9 Of him wast thou unmindful. 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 so let those who want to follow its guidance do so. 12 Inscribed in Writs honoured, 13 exalted and purified, 14 (Written) by the hands of scribes- 15 and angelic scribes. 16 Perish the human! How unthankful he is! 17 From what did He create him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm He creates him, and thereupon determines his nature, 19 then the way eased for him, 20 Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him. 21 and then, if it be His will, He shall raise him again to life, 22 But no. He has not fulfilled what was enjoined on him. 23 Let man, then, consider [the sources of] his food: 24 That We pour forth water in abundance, 25 Then We split the earth properly. 26 And We cause therein the grain to grow, 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 and olives, and palms, 29 and gardens dense with foliage, 30 And fruits and herbage: 31 Provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry shall be sounded 33 on that Day each person will flee from his brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 and his consort and his children; 36 on that Day each will be occupied with his own business, making him oblivious of all save himself. 37 on that Day some faces will be beaming, 38 laughing, rejoicing at glad tidings. 39 whereas some faces will be covered with dust 40 Covered with the blackness (of shame): 41 those will be ones who denied the truth and were immersed in iniquity. 42
