Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
CONSIDER the daybreak 1 And the Ten Nights, 2 and the even and the odd, 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 There surely is an oath for thinking man. 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 (The people of) Aram, possessors of lofty buildings, 7 Like whom no one else was born in the cities. 8 And (with) Thamud (people), who cut (hewed) out rocks in the valley (to make dwellings)? 9 And with Fir'awn, owner of the stakes 10 who all were insolent in the land 11 And who then spread a lot of turmoil in them. 12 Therefore your Lord struck them hard with the means of punishment. 13 Lo! thy Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, when his Lord tries him by giving him honour and gifts, then he says (puffed up): "My Lord has honoured me." 15 but when He tests him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Lord has disgraced me." 16 Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan 17 And urge not on the feeding of AlMiskin (the poor)! 18 And ye devour inheritance - all with greed, 19 And you harbour intense love for wealth. 20 No! But when the earth quakes and is pounded, 21 And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank, 22 and Gehenna (Hell) is brought near on that Day the human will remember, and how shall the Reminder be for him? 23 He shall say, 'O would that I had forwarded for my life!' 24 For, none can make suffer as He will make suffer [the sinners] on that Day, 25 And no one shall bind with (anything like) His binding. 26 O thou peaceful soul! 27 Return unto thine Lord well pleased and well-pleasing. 28 Enter thou among My righteous bondmen! 29 "Yea, enter thou My Heaven! 30
