The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Recite in the name of your Lord who created - 1 created man out of a germ-cell 2 Read, and your Lord only is the Most Beneficent, 3 who taught by the pen, 4 Taught man that which he knew not. 5 Yet man behaves arrogantly, 6 Because he considers himself self-sufficient. 7 Surely unto thy Lord is the Returning. 8 Have you seen the one who forbids 9 a servant (of Allah) when he prays? 10 Tell me, if he (Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) is on the guidance (of Allah)? 11 Or enjoins piety? 12 Hast thou seen if he denieth (Allah's guidance) and is froward? 13 Knoweth he not that Allah doth see? 14 Let him know that if he does not desist, We shall certainly drag him by his forelocks, 15 a lying, sinful forelock. 16 Then, let him call his assembly, 17 We too would summon the braves of the army. 18 No, not at all. Never obey him. But prostrate yourself and become nigh (to your Lord). ۩ 19
