The Inevitable (Al-Waaqe'ah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ When there happeneth the Event. 1 there will be nought that could give the lie to its having come to pass, 2 abasing, exalting, 3 When the earth shall be shaken with a (severe) shaking, 4 And the mountains will be powdered to dust. 5 Becoming dust scattered abroad, 6 And you (all) will be in three kinds (i.e. separate groups). 7 So those on the right – how (fortunate) are those on the right! 8 Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 9 And the preceders are the preceders. 10 Those are they who will be brought nigh 11 in the Gardens of Delight 12 A multitude from the ancients. 13 And a few from the later generations. 14 They will recline on jewelled couches 15 Reclining on them, facing each other. 16 There will circulate among them young boys made eternal 17 with goblets, and ewers, and a cup from a spring 18 Unheady, uninebriating; 19 And fruit; that they may choose. 20 and the flesh of birds, as they desire. 21 and fair maidens with large, lustrous eyes 22 The likes unto pearls hidden. 23 As recompense for all they had done. 24 They will not hear any unnecessary or sinful talk 25 only the words of peace and tranquillity. 26 As for the People on the Right, how fortunate shall be the people on the Right! 27 (They will be) among Lote-trees without thorns, 28 and serried acacias, 29 And a shade ever-spread. 30 and flowing water 31 And fruit in plenty, 32 Unending, unforbidden, 33 They shall be on upraised couches, 34 We have created maidens perfectly 35 And made them virginal, 36 Loving companions matched in age, 37 For the sake of the companions of the right hand. 38
