a large group of the earlier people 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 BUT AS FOR those who have persevered in evil - what of those who have persevered in evil? 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 They had lived in luxury before this 45 and persisted in the Great Sin, 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 "Then moreover, verily, you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)! 51 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 We have created you, so why do you not believe? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 Do ye create it or are We the Creator? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? 63 Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment). 65 (Saying:) 'We are laden with debts! 66 nay; we have been undone!” 67 Behold! the water which ye drink: 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
