a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 Will be in the scorching wind and boiling water, 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 neither cool nor good. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 "Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!" 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Behold! that which ye emit. 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 Lo! we are laden with debt! 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who create? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
