a good many of olden times, 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 Amidst scorching wind and scalding water. 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 “And also our forefathers?” 48 Proclaim, “Without doubt all – the former and the latter.” 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 And shall be drinkers thereon of boiling water. 54 like a thirsty camel". 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? 63 Is it you who cause them to grow or do We? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment). 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who sent it down from the clouds or is it We who have sent it down? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
