The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou enveloped! 1 Rise up and warn! 2 And your Lord (Allah) magnify! 3 And your garments do purify, 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 And bestow not favour that thou mayest receive more. 6 and be patient unto thy Lord. 7 When the Trumpet is sounded, 8 that very Day shall be a day of anguish, 9 and it will not be easy for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me with him whom I created alone, 11 and whom I have granted abundant wealth 12 And sons dwelling in his presence, 13 And I adjusted affairs for him adjustably; 14 Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);- 15 By no means; he is stubbornly opposed to Our Signs. 16 I shall soon constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Indeed he thought, and inwardly decided. 18 Ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme? 19 Again, may he be cursed how he plotted; 20 Then looked he, 21 then he frowned, and scowled, 22 Then he turned back and was arrogant 23 And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 Anon shall I roast him into the Scorching Fire. 26 And what have you understood, what hell is! 27 It spares not, neither leaves alone 28 Blackening the skins. 29 Above it are nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
