The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! 1 Arise and warn! 2 And thy Sustainer's greatness glorify! 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 And uncleanliness avoid 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 But, for thy Lord's (Cause), be patient and constant! 7 So when the Trumpet will be blown. 8 Surely that day will be a day of anguish, 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Leave him to Me whom I created alone, 11 And gave him vast wealth. 12 and children living in his presence, 13 And made things easy for them. 14 Then he desires that I should add more. 15 By no means! He has been stubbornly hostile to Our revelation: 16 Anon I shall afflict him with a fearful woe. 17 Surely he reflected and guessed, 18 Perish he! How maliciously he devised! 19 yea, he destroys himself, the way he meditates! 20 May he be condemned again for his schemes! He looked around, 21 Then he frowned and scowled, 22 Then turned his back and waxed proud, 23 And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 Him shall I fling unto the burning. 26 And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is? 27 It leaves and spares no one and nothing. 28 Blackening the skins. 29 Over it are appointed nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be masters of the Fire, and their number We have appointed only as a trial for the unbelievers, that those who were given the Book may have certainty, and that those who believe may increase in belief, and that those who were given the Book and those who believe may not be in-doubt, and that those in whose hearts there is sickness, and the unbelievers, may say, 'What did God intend by this as a similitude?' So God leads astray whomsoever He will, and He guides whomsoever He will; and none knows the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but a Reminder to mortals. 31
