Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the dawn 1 by the Ten Nights, 2 The multiple and the one, 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 Truly in that there is an oath for those who possess understanding. 5 Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Ad 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 the like of which has never been created in the land, 8 And the tribe of Thamud, who hewed rocks in the valley. 9 And (with) Fir'aun (Pharaoh), who had pegs (who used to torture men by binding them to pegs)? 10 Who terrorised the region, 11 and brought about great corruption therein: 12 So your Lord poured a scourge of punishment over them. 13 your Lord keeps an eye on (all evil-doing people). 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him, and honours him, and blesses him, then he says, 'My Lord has honoured me.' 15 But when He tests him by straitening his sustenance, he says: “My Lord has humiliated me.” 16 Nay! but you do not honor the orphan, 17 and do not urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether, 19 and why do you have an excessive love of riches? 20 Surely when We pound the earth to powder grounded, pounded to dust, 21 And thy Lord cometh, and His angels, rank upon rank, 22 And the Hell on that Day shall be brought nigh. On that Day man shall remember, but how will remembrance avail him? 23 He shall say: O! would that I had sent before for (this) my life! 24 On that Day no one will punish as He punishes, 25 and none can bind with bonds like His! 26 O the contented soul! 27 return unto thy Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing! 28 "Enter you, then, among My honoured slaves, 29 Enter then My garden." 30
