Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city - 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and struggle. 4 Thinketh he, that none hath power over him? 5 He says (boastfully): "I have wasted wealth in abundance!" 6 Does he believe that none has seen him? 7 Did We not give him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 And showed him two highways (of good and evil)? 10 But he has not broken through the difficult pass. 11 And what could make thee conceive what it is, that steep uphill road? 12 (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.) 13 Or the giving of food in a day of privation 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 Or to a Miskin (poor) afflicted with misery. 16 And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind. 17 Their place will be on the right hand. 18 But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand: 19 over them is a Fire covered down. 20
